Giving the Gifts of Learning to The Over-55s

“Youth is wasted on the young,” said the Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw. What manna from heaven it would be, did his comment suggest, to have the vitality and #agility of earlier years coupled with the #wisdom that develops from the rich experience of life!

I was drawn to the quote having seen Cloey Callahan’s WorkLife article pointing to opportunities that are being missed where “workplace #training and #development [is] neglecting the over-55s.”

As a #leadership advisory and executive #coaching professional, I work with those pre and post the half-century mark.  I am struck by how – as with any difference or #diversity – there can be a beauty in the melding together of those more youthful and more seasoned…be that in body or in spirit!

Indeed, there is an opportunity lost if those over the half-century are neglected by #business #leaders from training, upskilling and reskilling programmes: I have witnessed luminal moments with clients where, at this stage in life, there are questions they ask themselves such as “what is the next?,” “how can I build on my skills, learn new ones and take myself?,” “what might renew me, give me increased energy and a revitalised sense of #purpose?”

With those questions, comes a hunger to #learn.

I adore the BB King quote, “The beautiful thing about #learning is nobody can take it away from you.”
